Healing Trauma with Acupuncture

Trauma can be emotional or physical and carries a weight with it for those who suffer from a traumatic event and the longer post-traumatic stress that can come from it. Fortunately, we live in a time where help is available. Since acupuncture subscribes to the whole mind/body/spirit healing approach to balancing energy and achieving complete wellness, it makes sense that acupuncture could be a helpful tool to treating various forms of trauma and its impact on both the mind and body.

A paper from Boston University by Danielle Rousseau explained it well: “The way acupuncture can aid in trauma recovery is by alleviating the symptoms either directly or residually caused by the event. For example, after a car accident, an individual might suffer pain in their neck and experience anxiety whenever they are in a car again. Acupuncture can help to relieve the neck pain that both hinders quality of life and acts as a constant reminder of the accident. Chronic pain is also a common side effect of adverse childhood experiences. When an adult comes in for therapy with a long history of repeat traumas, alleviating physical pain is a great starting point to begin recovery. This allows for a greater sense of control in one’s own body and opens doors for further therapeutic practices like yoga and exercise that would not have been possible with chronic pain. Acupuncture may not be the cure-all that therapists and researchers are looking for to help their patients overcome past traumas but its longstanding history and overwhelming success rate for non-trauma related pain demands more research be conducted on the practice’s effects on trauma.”

With its whole-body approach, acupuncture is a holistic option to treat both the physical symptoms that can come from experiencing trauma as well as the processing of emotions that follows. And the research is backing this up. A 2007 randomized controlled pilot trial found that, “acupuncture may be an efficacious and acceptable non exposure treatment option for PTSD.”

A 2019 study from Italy found that acupuncture improved both the mental and physical symptoms associated with PTSD. Researchers looked at the effects of acupuncture on survivors of a major earthquake in Italy that caused 300 deaths and left 30,000 people homeless. Researchers found that prior to treatment, approximately 70% of the study subjects reported symptoms associated with PTSD. They also found that after the third acupuncture treatment both the physical symptoms like musculoskeletal pain and mental symptoms like anxiety and depression from the trauma significantly improved with 60% of the patients in the study.

Contact me if you’re suffering from the effects of trauma. I will complete a comprehensive health history to not only address your symptoms but help you address the underlying mental and emotional impacts as well. Three Reasons to Add Deep Breathing to Your Daily Routine

You might think breathing is second nature…you’re doing it right now as you are reading this. Did you know, however, that there are different kinds of breathing and that what is called ‘deep breathing’ can have important health benefits?

Read on to learn three of the most important reasons you should add deep breathing to your daily routine.

Manage Anxiety and Depression

Deep breathing, also known as diaphragmatic breathing, activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is also known as the “rest and digest” system. The job of the parasympathetic nervous system is to conserve energy that is then used for bodily functions like digestion and urination. Deep breathing helps to activate the vagus nerve which oversees mood, digestion, and even heart rate.

Improve Focus and Reduce Stress

As part of my lifestyle recommendations, I always suggest taking a minute to check in with oneself throughout the day, especially in times of stress or when you feel like you can’t focus; it’s a great way to incorporate deep breathing.

Here’s how:

Your diaphragm is the small muscle just below your lungs. If you breathe correctly, it contracts and moves downward so your lungs expand to take in fresh air. When you exhale, the opposite occurs, and your diaphragm relaxes and slides further up your chest cavity.

First, put one hand over your heart and one hand on your abdomen. Breathe in through your nose, allowing the air to fill your belly. Notice how the hand on your stomach moves while the hand on your heart doesn’t. Draw your navel toward your spine as you exhale. If it helps, pretend you are blowing out the candles on your birthday cake. Notice how the hand on your stomach slides back to its original position. Repeat these steps three to five times to start paying particular attention to how you feel after each breath.

This process will improve your focus and lower your stress levels the more you incorporate it into your day. Maybe set an alarm on your phone to stop once in the morning, once during lunch and once in the evening to practice deep breathing.

Improves Sleep

If you find yourself in high stress situations and suffering from anxiety or depression, then you probably aren’t sleeping very well either. Use these steps to slow yourself down before bed to clear your mind and slow your heart rate. Keep a journal once you begin deep breathing regularly and you may notice that the more you do it the better you find yourself sleeping.

And just like almost everything in life, there is an app for that! There are several apps available to help you manage your breathing. If you own an Apple Watch, you already have access to a breathing app, perfectly named Breathe. The app will check in with you, prompting you to take one-minute breathing breaks and guiding you when to exhale and inhale. There are other apps available so a quick search in your app store will help you find the one that is right for you.

The best part about incorporating deep breathing into your daily routine is that you can do it anywhere and nobody even realizes that’s what you are doing. When you know you are going to head into a situation that is stressful or gives you anxiety, practice deep breathing ahead of time and during the event.

Deep breathing is a fantastic tool for your mental health toolbox so take the time to incorporate it into your daily routine and pay attention to how you feel before and after. Adjust how often and what time of day you might practice deep breathing and watch your body and your mind adapt to that increase in oxygen throughout the day.

8 Benefits of Practicing Regular Meditation

Meditation has a reputation for several health benefits but here are the top eight reasons establishing a regular meditation routine can improve your overall health and wellbeing.

But first, what is meditation? It is defined as the regular process of training your mind to focus and redirect your thoughts.

Stress Buster

Research proves that meditation can really be a stress reducer. Too much stress in your life can cause sleep issues, depression, anxiety, and even high blood pressure. An 8-week study published in 2013 found that “mindfulness meditation” actually reduced the inflammatory response caused by too much stress.

Reduce Anxiety

As mentioned previously, as stress levels decrease, so does anxiety. A 2014 study examined the transcendental meditation technique and found that it reduced anxiety significantly.
Additional
research has found that a variety of techniques can reduce anxiety levels.
It doesn’t matter what technique you try, just get started!

Emotional Health

After the pandemic, we all know just how important it is to maintain our mental health. Regular meditation has been shown to reduce the symptoms of depression by decreasing the levels of inflammatory chemicals called cytokines, which are released in response to stress. It can also help people experience fewer negative thoughts.

Improve Attention Span

Studies also show that regular meditation practices can lead to enhanced performance on visual tasks and a great attention span than those who don’t regularly practice meditation.
You don’t need to set a goal of meditating for hours on end; other studies have indicated that even short periods of meditation each day can be a benefit.
One study found that just 13 minutes a day of meditation enhanced attention and memory after just eight weeks.

Reduce Memory Loss

Now that you know that regular meditation can lead to improvements in attention and clarity, you might be happy to hear that both benefits lead to keeping your mind young and healthy overall.

Studies have found that in addition to fighting the normal age-related memory loss that comes from getting older, meditation can at least partially improve memory in those suffering from dementia. It can also help to control stress and improve coping skills in caregivers.

Better Sleep

Healthy sleep patterns lead to a host of health benefits and one study found that people who meditated regularly not only remained asleep for longer periods of time, but also have improved insomnia severity. Meditation can help you relax and release tension, thus placing you in a peaceful state that allows you to fall asleep quickly and more easily.

Pain Relief

One review of 38 studies concluded that mindfulness meditation could not only reduce pain, but also improve quality of life, and decrease the symptoms of depression in those suffering from chronic pain.

Keep Blood Pressure in Check

The dangers of high blood pressure are common knowledge and include heart disease and stroke among other issues. A 2015 meta-analysis of 12 studies with nearly 1,000 participants found that meditation helped to reduce blood pressure.

The bottom line is that meditation is something that everyone can try to improve their mental and emotional health. You don’t have to have a particular level of athletic ability; it doesn’t require a special location or equipment and you don’t have to buy a membership to a gym to try it. A simple Google or YouTube search can get you started. Trying out a variety of styles to see what might work best for you is a great way to begin your meditation journey!

Acupuncture for Treating Addiction

People seeking treatment for addiction typically have a complex road to recovery. Everyone’s story is different, and people have different needs and respond to treatment in their own time and in their own way.
What many people might not be familiar with are the supplemental therapies that can be used to help promote healing and recovery. One of those supplemental therapies is the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) acupuncture protocol.

What is the NADA protocol?

The NADA protocol is different from traditional acupuncture in that traditional acupuncture uses the placement of needles in different points on the body and the NADA protocol is based on ear or auricular therapy. The needles are placed in five specific points on the ear while patients rest for approximately 30-45 minutes.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, the specific points referenced are:

  • Kidney (promotes healing and eases fear)
  • Liver (this ear point helps with blood purification and detoxification
  • Lung (helps with the release of emotions and expands lung capacity)
  • Shen Men (promotes detoxification, reduces pain, helps energize other acupuncture points)
  • Sympathetic (helps manage the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system)

Another advantage to the NADA protocol is that it is often offered in group settings which makes it an affordable option for a lot of people looking for additional help in their recovery journey. The NADA provides training for a wide variety of people who deal with those in addiction recovery including addiction counselors, mental health therapists and social workers, police and correctional officers and those working in drug court, disaster relief teams and other trauma support center staff, first responders, nurses, and EMTs, as well as medical doctors and acupuncturists.

The NADA protocol has shown success in decreasing cravings for alcohol and drugs.
In addition to addiction, the NADA protocol can also be used to help those who have suffered a traumatic event. One study demonstrated how this protocol helped people relax and sleep better after the traumatic events of September 11, 2001. The same results were found when it was used after hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

Another study found that the NADA protocol helped improve the quality of life for those working through traditional treatment programs. Those receiving the protocol said they felt better about themselves and had more energy than those who hadn’t received the protocol. They also reported engaging in less alcohol or tobacco use during the study’s three- and six-month follow-up periods.

When combined with other treatment options such as group counseling, individual therapy and support groups, acupuncture can help those suffering from a substance addiction.
Research has shown that acupuncture can help reduce cravings, increase patient retention in rehab, easy physical pain and withdrawal symptoms, help regulate sleep, and decrease anxiety and stress. Just like traditional acupuncture, the side effects and risks are few, so those looking for a supplemental treatment option should consider the NADA protocol as a safe addition to their treatment options.

If you suffer from addiction or trauma, ask me about the NADA protocol and other traditional acupuncture treatment options. Acupuncture’s benefits are vast, and I will conduct a thorough health history and answer all your questions.

Set yourself up for a successful recovery and call today to make an appointment.

Acupuncture Helps with PTSD Symptoms

While commonly connected to those who have served in the military, post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD, can impact anyone who has suffered from violence or emotional trauma. The National Institute of Mental Health defines PTSD this way, “Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after exposure to a potentially traumatic event that is beyond a typical stressor.” According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs approximately 12 million adults in the U.S. suffer from PTSD during a given year.

Research has shown that acupuncture for PTSD reduces anxiety and stress levels. Acupuncture is also a great treatment option for those suffering from other health issues because of PTSD (i.e., insomnia, digestive issues, headaches, stress and anxiety, etc.).

How it Works

Typically, acupuncture treatment for PTSD will focus on specific auricular points that target different areas of the brain. Some address the emotions, memories, or even amnesia.

Perhaps a surprising reason acupuncture for PTSD is so popular is that it allows the person suffering from the trauma to receive help without having to go into detail about the cause of the trauma. While a full medical health history is taken, not having to relive the trauma helps patients to feel safe and perhaps a bit more relaxed.

PTSD is a complex condition. Each person with PTSD is different and can present with many symptoms including depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, chronic pain, and other mental health concerns, just to name a few. The good news is that acupuncture has a proven track record of success in treating these issues.

Many people who suffer from PTSD also have insomnia or other sleep issues. Acupuncture has also been proven to increase serotonin levels which helps to improve sleep as well as mood. It’s an effective drug-free treatment without the side effects often caused by prescription medications. A study from 2015 found “chronic fatigue patients who were given acupuncture as a supplement to conventional treatment showed greater improvement over patients who did not receive acupuncture.”

Chronic pain is often another complaint of those with PTSD and it can be debilitating for those suffering from it as it directly impacts their quality of life. People often treat chronic pain with anti-inflammatory medications (both prescription and over the counter), physical therapy, or with ice and heat, but those options don’t always provide long lasting relief. Acupuncture is an excellent drug-free treatment option.

Whether you suffer from PTSD or any of the associated symptoms, or you’re looking to achieve better overall balance in your life, consistent acupuncture treatments just might be the solution you need.

Five Benefits of Consistent Acupuncture Treatments

In a nutshell, traditional acupuncture, also known as Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM, works under the belief that the body is controlled by a flow of energy called qi traveling through pathways in the body that are called meridians. Acupuncturists believe that when these pathways become blocked and the energy can’t flow freely, various health problems begin to appear.

According to Pacific College of Health and Science, which houses one of the acupuncture schools here in the U.S., “while some practitioners still follow the traditional philosophy of qi, others have also started incorporating a more integrative approach, supported by research and Western medicine principles. For example, many of today’s acupuncturists view the acupuncture points as places that stimulate nerves, invigorating the body’s natural pain fighting and healing processes.”

There are many common ailments treated with acupuncture including pain relief, allergies, chronic inflammatory conditions, and even sleep disorders. Research also supports acupuncture in helping to support stronger immune and nervous systems. Here are five health benefits of consistent acupuncture treatments.

Stress Relief

With the pandemic and all the changes in the world over the last couple of years, people are desperately looking for ways to reduce the stress in their lives. Acupuncture helps to restore energy and balance by triggering nervous system responses to stress. Research has found that acupuncture lowers stress hormones and improves the mood to help reduce the feeling of anxiety.

Reduced Pain

Acupuncture is often used to supplement other medical treatments or as an alternative to a standard pain treatment option. After an acupuncture treatment, patients often find relieve lasting from several hours to even weeks post-treatment, depending on the severity of the condition. Research has shown acupuncture to be effective for chronic pain conditions like migraines, arthritis, back and neck pain, and even TMJ. Adding consistent treatments helps you keep the pain under control in a natural and pharmaceutical-free way.

Improved Neurological Health

Mental clarity throughout the day can be a challenge sometimes. The brain fog that can come from stress, poor diet, pain, or other health issues can rob us of productivity. And there are other neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s which can be life altering. Clinical research has shown that acupuncture can improve language and motor skills in patients with neurological issues.

Improved Digestion

Many people today suffer from heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, and other digestive challenges. Believe it or not, when your digestive system isn’t working properly it can have an impact on your overall health. As mentioned previously, acupuncture seeks to establish balance throughout the body and this includes balance in the digestive tract. Consistent acupuncture treatments can help regulate digestive health, thus bringing relief from common issues. You don’t have to live with these types of digestive struggles, regular acupuncture can help!

Better Sleep

A final benefit to regular acupuncture is improved sleep. Now that your stress is less, you are in less pain, your mind is clear and your digestion is on track, it only seems logical that your sleep will improve dramatically. Should you suffer from insomnia or another sleep disorder, acupuncture has been proven to relieve the underlying issues that could be causing the disruption to your sleep. Ask your acupuncturist about the five specific points that just might help you get your sleep schedule back on track.

If you are looking to achieve better overall balance in your life, consistent acupuncture treatments just might be the solution you are looking for. Call today and get your wellness journey back on track!

Feeling Stressed and Anxious? Try Acupuncture

We all know that stress is just a part of life. We all have moments of feeling anxious or depressed, but when those feelings become more of a permanent fixture in our lives, it is time to get some help. What many may not know is how effective acupuncture can be in providing relief to the mental and physical symptoms associated with anxiety and depression.

In fact, a 2010 study states: “Depression and anxiety together constitute a significant contribution to the global burden of disease. Acupuncture is widely used for treatment of anxiety and depression and use is increasing. The theoretical basis for acupuncture diagnosis and treatment derives from traditional Chinese medicine theory. An alternative approach is used in medical acupuncture which relies more heavily on contemporary neurophysiology and conventional diagnosis.”

The Balance of Chi & a Physiological Response

The pressures of life that lead to too much stress can impact the balance of Chi in the body. Chi is often defined as the body’s energy and flows through channels in the body called meridians. When our bodies are balanced, chi flows through the meridian network and our systems are operating as they should be. When chi is not balanced, we can experience a host of physical symptoms including high blood pressure, digestive issues, loss of appetite, and impacts to our nervous system.

Perhaps the best way to think of it is that acupuncture can balance the nervous system and train it to behave as optimally as it should to relieve those symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. Studies have shown that acupuncture can have a positive impact on heart rate variability which then leads to a healthy central autonomic network.

It is also important to note that anxiety and depression can elicit both emotional and physical symptoms. Emotional symptoms include feeling overwhelmed, agitated, or moody, trouble quieting the mind, feelings of worthlessness that then lead to avoiding social situations and other people. Physical symptoms include lack of energy, headache, digestion issues, body aches and pains, rapid heartbeat, insomnia, nervousness, frequent sickness, and cold sweats, just to name a few of the most common complaints.

If you suffer from feelings of anxiety and depression, talk to your acupuncturist to develop the appropriate treatment plan. Studies have shown that the right “dose” of acupuncture was the key in helping patients see results and a reduction of the symptoms of stress and depression. “Dose” is defined as both the number of treatment sessions overall, as well as the number of acupuncture points addressed in each session. Studies have also shown that acupuncture can help to get heart rate variability back to an optimal range which can help improve issues with heart disease, hypertension, anxiety and depression, insomnia, migraines, and muscle pain — all physical signs of stress.

In addition to regular acupuncture treatments, your practitioner can also recommend herbal supplements and nutrition and dietary changes that can also get your energy back in balance. Do not suffer another day. Call today and schedule your appointment so you can get a treatment plan in place and get back into balance.

Four Ways Acupuncture Can Improve Men’s Health

Some men might not consider acupuncture as a first resort when wanting a health reset, but acupuncture can be a great way to deal with some of the issues that come with getting older. There are certainly more than four, but here are the top four ways acupuncture can improve men’s health.

  1. Reducing Stress

Many lifestyle factors can help in reducing stress levels. What many may not understand is how effective acupuncture can be at helping to reduce stress and anxiety levels. Acupuncturists can stimulate specific points on the body which can release endorphins that produce a calming effect on the nervous system.

  1. Reducing Chronic Pain

A study published in the journal Pain Medicine, showed that acupuncture was found to decrease pain intensity and frequency for people suffering from chronic low back pain. And this reduction in pain was seen after just one treatment session. Most patients experience relief with multiple sessions over several weeks, depending on the severity of the pain condition.

Studies have shown that acupuncture reduces inflammation, increases strength, improves range of motion and flexibility and can stimulate tissue repair.

  1. Improving Sleep Quality

Sleep is an essential component to good health as it allows our bodies to recover and heal. Men can struggle with achieving good sleep patterns due to high testosterone levels. Regular acupuncture treatment addresses the underlying causes of poor sleep and can help men get a better night’s rest for up to six months post-treatment in some cases.

  1. Improving Fertility

Fertility issues tend to be a more talked about issue with women but men can also suffer from infertility problems. Research shows that as many as one in six couples have trouble conceiving and up to half of infertility issues are attributed to the male. Acupuncture can play a major role in helping to boost sperm quality, quantity, motility, and vitality. Acupuncture can also address low testosterone levels which can help with semen production, sex drive, and erectile dysfunction.

Acupuncturists and Chinese medicine practitioners also have an understanding of the importance of the kidneys in sexual function and fertility issues. A kidney imbalance can contribute to a variety of issues and regular acupuncture treatments can be a great benefit to men.

These are not the only four benefits acupuncture can bring to improve men’s health but they are the most frequent reasons men seek out acupuncture. Make sure you share any additional health concerns with your acupuncturist, as they can address a variety of issues including nutrition, allergies, blood pressure, and prostate issues just to name a few. Make your appointment today and get a thorough health intake to address your concerns and get back on the road to health and wellness!

Top 3 Reasons Acupuncture is Great for Seniors

As we get older, those aches and pains become a little more pronounced and life begins to create some new challenges. For many seniors, schedules become impacted with doctor’s appointments and trips to the pharmacy. If you haven’t tried acupuncture, here are three reasons you should give it a try as it can greatly help some of the greatest health challenges facing seniors today.

Pain Relief

Studies have shown that acupuncture is highly effective at treating chronic pain conditions. For example, rheumatoid arthritis is commonly treated with acupuncture. Of course, the frequency, length and number of treatments will vary depending on the severity of the condition, but acupuncture has been proven to be a powerful tool in addressing the inflammation common in arthritis, which then relieves the pain, discomfort, and swelling that often comes with the disease.

Acupuncture has been shown to be highly effective at treating back and neck pain as well as neuropathy pain, particularly for those with diabetes. Neuropathy impacts the peripheral nerves of the body and for those suffering from it, it feels like a tingling or burning sensation in the legs or arms. Acupuncture helps by promoting nerve conduction.
